Independent home-water research
Your water report is not a shopping list.
Start with what is actually in your water. We translate reports, certification claims, and lifetime costs into equipment shortlists you can audit.
No pay-to-rank placements. Affiliate relationships are disclosed and excluded from scoring.

Start with three facts about your water.
This is a research starting point—not a diagnosis or a substitute for a certified water test.

Three decisions prevent the most expensive mistakes.
- 01
Identify the source
Public utilities issue Consumer Confidence Reports. Private-well owners need current testing from a certified laboratory.
- 02
Name the problem
Chlorine taste, hardness, iron, lead, and PFAS are different problems. No single certification or treatment handles everything.
- 03
Choose the treatment point
Protecting one drinking tap and treating every gallon entering a home require different equipment, flow, maintenance, and budgets.

Four markets. One evidence standard.
Search demand tells us where confusion is costly. It does not decide which product wins.
Every tap · city water
Whole-house water filters
Compare media, verified reduction claims, flow rate, replacement schedules, and ten-year ownership cost.Hard water · scale control
Water softeners
Separate actual ion-exchange softeners from conditioners, then size capacity around measured hardness and household demand.Drinking tap · targeted reduction
Reverse osmosis systems
Compare certified reduction claims, recovery efficiency, tank design, filter cost, and replacement availability.Private wells · test first
Well-water filtration systems
Start with a certified laboratory result, then match sediment, iron, manganese, sulfur, hardness, or microbial concerns.Search figures are directional US Semrush estimates checked September 2026.
What counts as proof
“Tested to” is not the same as independently certified.
A standard number alone does not establish that a specific model reduces the contaminant you care about. We trace the exact model to its listing and performance data.
Read the evidence rulesStandards summarize categories. Certification claims still vary by exact product.

Three rankings. Every score has a source trail.
Our first documentation reviews cover whole-house filters, water softeners, and under-sink reverse osmosis. The rankings show unresolved conflicts and do not claim hands-on testing that has not happened.
